CMI is one of six National Science Foundation (NSF) designated industry-university information and technology research centers. Though there are more than 50 NSF research centers across the country, including the six focusing on information and technology, the Center for the Management of Information is one of only two business schools nationwide selected to house an NSF center. The NSF center brings together nationally prominent faculty from the business college, medical school, computer science department, and social sciences with researchers from participating corporations to study the impact of collaborative technologies, computers, telecommunications, multimedia and the Internet and on business, war fighting and the workplace.
The Center for the Management of Information at the University of Arizona receives support from the National Science Foundation as part of the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center program. The goal of CMI is to integrate technology, group dynamics, and organizational behavior to meet the demands of today's work environment and to shape the workplace of the future. The only constraint to this goal is that research is subject to collaboration and the demands of supporting relevant issues including: communication, knowledge transfer, information sharing, decision-making, design, organizational learning, and education.
Current research areas include: business process reengineering, participatory design, requirements engineering, deception detection, human communication, health informatics, group writing, document management, group facilitation methods, strategic and dynamic planning, development and evaluation of distributed meeting environments, advanced visualization of collaborative meeting environments, adoption and diffusion of technology, modeling and simulation of work environments, and technology support for education and training.
Membership in CMI provides a number of benefits and services that encourage education, address issues, and provide knowledge. Some of the benefits include:
Membership is open to any individual or organization that is able to contribute to discussions and investigations in computer supported collaboration. Prior knowledge in the area is not requisite. Managers and technical staff from all market segments: government, education, consultants, and other professionals are encouraged to share their experiences, issues, and questions for the area. The center benefits from members with diverse backgrounds dedicated to pioneering the field.
There are three types of membership to the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center at CMI. Annual membership classifications and dues are as follows:
Center Sponsor - $100,000
